Staircase glossary: understanding technical terms
When ordering a custom staircase in Luxembourg, the quote can seem technical. « Floor opening », « central stringer », or « headroom » are precise terms that our experts use to guarantee a perfect installation. To help you see more clearly and discuss serenely during your visit to our Grass showroom, we have grouped here the essential terms that make up your future Lux Art Dream Design staircase.

The load-bearing structure: the skeleton of the stairs
The floor opening refers to the opening in the floor to allow the staircase to pass. This is where our Flexijet 3D measurements are crucial. The stringer is the structural piece that supports the treads; a central stringer (or mono-stringer) offers a modern and sleek look. A spiral (or helical) staircase revolves around a central post. Finally, the term monobloc refers to a single-piece structure, often used for very rigid and designer metal staircases.
Elements of the climb: treads and landings
The tread is the horizontal surface on which you place your foot. The riser is the vertical part between two treads; its absence creates an open staircase allowing light to pass. The going (or run) is the depth of the tread, a key point for comfort. If your staircase changes direction, it may feature a landing, an intermediate horizontal platform allowing for rest or pivoting. All these elements are customizable in solid wood or metal.
Safety and protection: railing and balustrade
Safety is paramount. The railing is the balustrade that follows the slope of the stairs to hold onto. The balustrade refers to the protection installed horizontally around the floor opening on the upper floor. The generic term guardrail encompasses these two protections. Whether they are made of glass for transparency, stainless steel cables for a nautical style, or vertical bars for child safety, they are custom-made to blend harmoniously into your interior while respecting current safety standards.
