Safe interior staircases for seniors

A staircase suited to long-term use takes into account mobility, balance and vision, which can change with age. These criteria can be built in from the design stage, without giving up a refined style.

Safe interior staircases for seniors
01

Comfortable width and tread depth for daily use

A sufficient tread depth and consistent step height reduce the effort needed at each step, especially going up. A generous width also allows moving with an object in hand or being accompanied if needed, without feeling cramped on the stair.

02

A continuous, easy-to-grip handrail

A handrail that runs uninterrupted along the whole length of the stair, with an easy-to-grip profile, offers constant support at every step. Extending it slightly beyond the first and last step also helps during transitions, often a trickier moment than the rest of the run.

03

Clear lighting along the whole run

Even lighting, without marked shadow areas or strong contrast between treads, helps judge each step height correctly. Lighting that activates automatically when approaching the stair can complement a standard switch, especially useful in the evening.

04

Stable, clearly identifiable step surfaces

A non-slip step surface, without too glossy a finish, remains an important long-term criterion. Slightly marking the edge of each step, through a colour contrast or a different finish, also helps perceive each boundary clearly, particularly later in the day.
