Pergola or veranda: how to choose?

Both the bioclimatic pergola and the veranda answer the need to extend living space outdoors, but their use, structure and openness differ profoundly. Understanding these differences helps choose the solution suited to your project and your home.

Pergola or veranda: how to choose?
01

An open structure versus an enclosed space

The veranda is an enclosed room, glazed all around and heatable, integrated as a genuine year-round extension of the home. The bioclimatic pergola, by nature, remains an outdoor structure: even fitted with optional side walls, it keeps a direct link to the garden and natural ventilation that a veranda does not offer in the same way. The choice therefore mainly depends on the intended use.

02

Uses and versatility across the seasons

The veranda allows year-round use thanks to its heating and insulation, ideal as a lounge, dining room or extra office. The bioclimatic pergola excels in spring, summer and autumn, offering great ambience versatility thanks to its adjustable louvres and modular side walls. In winter, its use depends on the closures installed, without matching the thermal comfort of an insulated veranda.

03

Impact on architecture and procedures

A veranda, being a heavier construction with foundations, is generally subject to more extensive administrative procedures than a pergola. The lighter, often reversible bioclimatic pergola may in some cases be subject to different rules, but this always depends on the commune and zone concerned. In both cases, checking with the urban planning department remains essential before moving forward.

04

Combining both solutions

It is not uncommon to combine an existing veranda with a bioclimatic pergola installed right next to it, to enjoy a heated space in winter and a modular outdoor space the rest of the year. Lux Art Dream Design studies every façade configuration to propose the most coherent layout, whether alongside an existing veranda, carport or awning.
