Choosing the colour of your interior staircase
The colour of a staircase strongly influences how a room is perceived, sometimes more than its shape. Options differ by material: RAL shades for metal, natural or tinted finishes for wood.

RAL shades for metal structures
The RAL colour chart allows precise definition of a metal staircase's shade, from classic matte black to bolder colours. A dark tone heightens contrast and visual presence, while a light shade close to the wall colour lets the structure blend in more.
Oiled, varnished or tinted finish for wood
On a wooden staircase, colour depends as much on the chosen wood species as on the applied finish. An oiled finish keeps a more natural, matte look, while a varnish adds shine and protects the surface differently. A tint can also bring the stair wood closer to or further from an existing floor.
Harmonising the shade with the rest of the room
Viewing a colour sample at different times of day, under the room's natural and artificial light, gives a more reliable sense of the final result than a screen image. Comparing this sample with the floor, walls and nearby joinery helps anticipate the overall effect.
Contrast or continuity: two valid approaches
Some projects seek a strong contrast, where the stair becomes a distinct focal point from the rest of the décor. Others prefer a discreet continuity, with the stair blending into the surrounding tones. Neither approach is superior: the choice depends on the role the stair should play in the room.
